Ever just wanted to enjoy your drive in movie without the drive home afterwards?

That is what we got to do recently in southern, Viriginia.

For all of our adult lives, our family has been lucky enough to live in communities that still honor the tradition of having a local drive in movie theatre. Visiting the Silver Bow Drive In during our time in Butte, MT, to raising our family in Fort Collins, CO and the excitement of the opening of the Holiday Twin Drive In each spring. However, this excitement for this radiated throughout our house, except for one person.

This one person, loved the idea, but did not look forward to the eventual results. Falling asleep at some point during the first movie, sleeping through the second one entirely, only to be rudely awakened and made fun of as they drove everyone home.

If only, this person thought, we could bring our beds and the comfort of our house to experience being outside with new friends, strangers, the fresh air, the smell of delicious buttery popcorn, and a good movie, without the drive home. That would be something!

Well thanks to the Harvest Host program, we did just this in September.

On a Friday night, while a small Virginia town was celebrating the high school homecoming football game, it was six campers full of strangers and only a few locals that got to enjoy this unique experience and create one of our most memorable camping stays over the past four years.

Supporting a local small business in a town you have never visited, while getting to meet the owners, hearing their story, and seeing the whole family arrive to work is our kind of experience. It’s these connections and conversations that are great for our hearts and one of our favorite parts of traveling full time.

Enjoy the little clip below that Andrea made of our experience and be sure to follow us on Instagram @alternateroads to see all the amazing content she creates to share our experience of full time travel.

Hope to see you all down the road!
