Four States, One Adventure: Chasing the Unexpected on the Open Road

Some travel days unfold exactly as planned, while others throw in surprises that make the journey even more memorable. Today was one of those days—four states, endless adventure, and a reminder of why flexibility is the key to truly experiencing life on the road.

Our morning kicked off in the misty mountains of western Georgia, where the fresh air and rolling peaks set the perfect tone for the day ahead. Nashville’s bustling traffic was waiting for us, but it was all worth it for a stop at the final destination on our State Line Whiskey Tour—Old Glory Distilling Co. A little shopping, a delicious lunch, and of course, a small tasting (only for one of us because, why not?) made for a great midday break before hitting the road once more.

Kentucky greeted us with highway construction that seemed determined to keep us from pressing forward, but we embraced the challenge, pushing onward until we arrived at our resting spot for the night—Bretz Wildlife and Winery in Illinois. After nine long hours on the road (which is far longer than our usual travel style), finally settling in for the evening felt like a reward in itself.

This trip wasn’t part of our original itinerary. We’d stayed an extra day at Cloudland Canyon State Park, waiting out severe storms rolling through the Midwest. That pause in our schedule led us to experiences we hadn’t planned for—new places, new people, and another reminder that life on the road is best lived with an open mind and a willingness to adjust.

It’s this flexibility, the ability to embrace change and welcome the unexpected, that makes full-time travel so fulfilling. Every detour is an opportunity, and every new stop is a chance to see the world from a fresh perspective.
