The view from Punta la Gringa

Our first takeaway from this experience was realizing it’s a long way south to the places where it’s really warm in January.  Give yourself time to get there, (about 21 hours of driving) and enjoy it. Being south of the Tropic of Cancer is well worth it in the reward of beautiful “winter” weather!

Now that the driving is over, we look back fondly at the places we visited.  From free camping at Bahia de Los Angeles (BOLA) to camping in the middle of town in beautiful San Ignacio, and finally beach camping at Playa Santispac.  Our caravan experience offered a little bit for everyone.  Walking historic town squares, visiting missions built in the 1600’s, paddleboarding the bahia, karaoke at the beach bar, or just sitting in peace soaking up the sun.

Baja’s laid-back vibe is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the states and just what our souls needed.

A unique feature we loved about being part of this caravan was that it ended with everyone camping on the beach, not with our return to the border!

Alexis and Steven’s goal was to teach you to become confident in how to travel throughout Baja. Providing you with information, skills, and tips on how to get pesos, handle checkpoints, where to gas up, and how to find the best taco stands.  (Hint:  If the locals are there you should stop 😊) They did a fantastic job of this, and we could not recommend them highly enough to anyone looking for this kind of experience.

On the final morning our caravan of characters was set to depart in different directions.  Those that had to return home for work, family functions, or just had enough, headed north back to the border.   On the flip side, if being halfway down the Baja Peninsula left you craving more, well then you were equipped with the knowledge and skills to travel on!  Head another six hours south and you will be turning your heater off for the winter!

“It isn’t goodbye, it is, see you later” to our traveling friends!

Thankfully, our schedule allowed us the freedom to spend all winter here.  With the caravan ending in mid-January, Andrea and I are still down here soaking up all the sunshine, waves, and hospitality Baja has to offer. As we slowly travel north and cross back into the US in mid-March, we will hopefully bring spring with us to all our family and friends. If we can get it through customs 😊
